 Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs)

THE PROJECT

The purpose of this website is to:

  • Define What Congenital Heart Defects Are

  • How Common Are Their Occurrences in Infants from the US and India

  • Symptoms and Possible Causes

  • Common Surgical Treatments

  • Mortality Rates After Treatment

  • What Affects an Infants Recovery Period

  • What Causes Complication Risks to Differ Between the Us and India

Before creating this website I also wrote a research paper to discuss my findings. To provide some background about my choice of topic, I've placed my reflection from the paper below:

Reflection

The purpose of this research paper is to understand if there are any differences between these two countries that might affect their different mortality statistics. However, it is not only a research project with no purpose because this is a health and healthcare issue that has the capacity to save lives. The reason why I chose this topic is that, as a newborn, I was diagnosed with TAPVR and an ASD that required a serious operation to repair the abnormalities. I decided this project was my chance to learn more about a topic that I have a personal connection to. The reason why I chose India starts with a conversation I had with my mom, I asked, “What would’ve happened if I had been born in India?” all under the assumption that I would still have two CHDs. As I reflected on this question, I wanted to expand it further and so I made the decision to make it the topic of my AIS project to learn more about public health in a field that I have a great amount of interest in.
